Introduction
and Vintage Tales
-------------------------------------------------------------
Howdy WDCUers,
Spring is here! Finally! Since our last newsletter much has
happened! We have had 2 Rallies and are now planning for our trip to
Rapid City for the 45th WBCCI International Rally. With less than 3 weeks to
International there is still time to sign up. As usual the WDCU members will
meet the Vintage Club prior to the rally for the VAC Parade into International
then we will park with them in the Vintage Parking Area. This years parade will
meet at the Elks Club of Rapid City on June 26. Parade time is 1:00 P.M.
The OBX is just a short 11 weeks away and Garnett Horner has
a great lineup of activities planned and as usual we will have the majority of
folks trying to get their reservations in at the last minute. So, if your a fan
of the beach, don't be left out of the fun, get your check to Ruth, ASAP. We
have a limited number of sites and one has your name on it. See Ya There!
--------------------------------------------------------------
This months Vintage Tale could be about our Tenth Airstream
Rescue or If you know of someone that would like a project Vintage trailer this
could be the one.
During our travels to Region 2, Hunt Jones had mentioned
that a friend told him about a trailer he had seen within a half hour of
Bloomsburg PA. On Sunday we planned a little Airstream Reconnaissance and took
the road to Buckhorn. Traveling through the lush Pennsylvania countryside we
came upon an open field on the side of a hill with a little brick ranch house.
In the valley, behind the house, was a 22' 1963 Safari or Flying Cloud in what
appears to be very good original condition. We couldn't see the inside because
the curtains were drawn and the apparent owners were not at home so we took
note of the available contact information and went back to the fairgrounds. If
your interested contact me.

WDCU Business
--------------------------------------------------------------
During the Fall Business Meeting, the Board discussed
methods of proposed Electronic Business Meetings and Voting. During the
discussion Trustee John McHugh stated that he would like to review software
provided by companies that make it expressly for that purpose. An action was
taken by 3rd VP Karen Waldo to investigate and report her findings to the board
for review and consideration. In February we discovered that these "canned
packages" were cost prohibitive to a small organization like ours. I then
took the action to draft a set of procedures for our own version of E-Business and
Voting. An e-mail discussion between members of the Board resulted in changes
to the draft and a vote was taken using the procedures outlined. The Board's
Voting results were a unanimous affirmation of the proposed procedures.
The need for this type of business interaction is essential
for two reasons. One, most of our members still work and have a limited amount
of time to attend rallies, that's why we only schedule 3 or 4 events a year.
Two, the membership of the WDCU is International and having an opportunity to
discuss and vote on issues between rallies with many miles between us, makes
the most sense. This will allow us to maximize our time for fun. which we can
all agree is the only reason for belonging to the club.

Rally Recaps

3rd Annual Cherry Blossom Rally
April 4 thru 7
Once again we descended upon the Rogers Farm in Upper
Marlboro, MD. We had 33 coaches parked in a half Wagon Wheel
configuration thanks to our 1st VP Garnett Horner. Our limited Electrical
supply was again provided by WDCU Affiliate member Matt Worner. Our Treasurer,
Dr. Ruth Baldwin took on the responsibility of Rally Contact for this years CBR
and along with her husband Dr John McHugh and Linda Moore provided much of the
cooking and preparation for our Saturday Night Dinner. Our hosts Clayton and
Christie Rogers provided and endless supply of energy preparing the site and
organizing the meals. And last but not least a Large Thank You is in order to
Jim Rogers for providing this excellent location to visit out nations Capitol
and the surrounding area. If I for got to mention your efforts in helping make
this rally a success, please let me know so we can recognize you.
This years weather was a bit on the cool side. Some attendees even said it was
"cold" making our requisite campfires a necessity. Also this year in
conjunction with our open house we had a visit from a film crew contracted by
the Travel Channel interviewing members and shooting footage to be aired on a
segment titled the "Secrets of RVing" which is to air sometime next
year. Stay tuned for details.
A number of us went into DC to visit the sites with the Cherry Blossoms in full
bloom, absolutely breathtaking. The weather was brisk with hazy sunshine. So
much to see, so little time.
That's why we'll be back next year. See ya then.

Region 2 Rally
at Bloomsburg
---------------------------------------------------------------
May 24-27 were the dates for the Region 2 Rally. The
"Kamikaze Karavaners" were at it again. A work conflict
prevented us from making opening ceremonies so we started out after work on
Thursday. We pulled into the fairgrounds at 2 am Friday morning knowing
that we would not be parked until morning so we pulled into the first
fairground entrance and went to sleep.
After getting settled the next morning, the usual greetings
and long winded talking began. Friday was a lazy day, but that was
just what we needed after our long drive. One event that we participated
in was the "Hassle Tassel". This is the Region 2 version of our
Happy Hour, where several members host a gathering of people at their trailer
for introductions, food faire and enjoyable conversation. The term
"Hassle Tassel" comes from the use of an invitation that has
a color coded tassel that matches the one at your designated host's trailer.
Saturday a group of us went to Knoebel's amusement
park. What a great family owned, old time, amusement park. You can
still take a picnic lunch in and enjoy the day without paying an admission
fee. There are very few amusement parks still around, like this one. The
only costs are those to purchase the tickets to ride the amusements. What
amusements did we ride, you ask? The roller coasters, of course. Are
there any others? They have 2 great wooden roller coasters, one new and one
very old. Lots of cliketty clack, drops and great air time. We had
a blast!
Saturday afternoon Rally participants organized a theme
parade where the dress code was western, gay nineties and clowns.
Saturday evening we enjoyed a catered chicken and pulled
pork dinner. After lining up at the door, we were seated at long tables,
ideal for meeting new and interesting people. WBCCIer's never seem to
miss an opportunity for sharing stories about travel life on the road, so it
was great fun.
Sunday was an another low key day. The weather
was on again off again, but the rain held off. The girls went off
shopping to Woolrich and came back with "lots of bargains" while the
boys went to the Region Rally flea market and picked up few bargains of their
own.
The Washington DC Unit was represented by members Wayne
& Linda Moore, Bob & Karen Waldo and affiliates Nancy & Bill
Richwine with Zoe & Daniel, Linda Bell & Jake Brubaker, Sue & Hunt
Jones, Betty Zimmer, Peter & Star Grover, all parked in the Vintage area.
Other Affiliates at the rally parked with their respective units were
Dennis & Carol Ober, Joe & Cathy Fodor, Don & Dee Perry, John and
Esther Dona, Barry & Leslie Heckenswiler, Wilson and Cindy Yerk, and new
affiliate Members Joan & Lee Baltzel. Be sure to welcome them when you see
them at our next Rally.
As President I attended the Region 2 Business meeting. Among
the Committee reports was the State of Membership in Region 2. Three of our New
York units have now been consolidated into one. There was a motion from the
President of the Ontario Unit, Royce Graham, to have the Region support an
effort by the International Board of Trustees to conduct a study on Membership
and present practices that would lead to a renewed Vision and Modernization of
the International Club. The motion passed with overwhelming support.
As many of you know overall membership in the club has been declining for several years. As a result, the unit assigned to host next years Region 2 Rally has declined to go it alone. If no one steps up to help, there will be "No" Region 2 Rally next year. I would like to take this opportunity to gather volunteers to help in filling the gap of workers and show that the newest unit in the WBCCI can be counted on to support our club and its fellow members when needed.
We have not been asked to do this, I just saw a need and decided to ask for
your support and offer it to the organizers. If you are one of those people
that can't miss an opportunity to serve and support this great organization
please contact me.

Description:
The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a very popular vacation
area with many opportunities to enjoy a variety of activities. Being
surrounded by water there are many water related things to do. Along the
Atlantic Ocean, you can enjoy a walk on the beach, laze around in the sun, or
enjoy a swim in the surf.
We will be camped at Camp Hatteras which is south of Nags
Head and in a somewhat less crowded area than north of Nags Head. I have
scheduled just a few of the many activities available on the OB. On
Friday we will carpool to Ocracoke Island which is accessed via a free ferry
from the town of Hatteras. You will be able to tour and visit the small
shops in the area and have lunch there as well. We will be returning to
Hatteras after lunch and in plenty of time to travel to the Weeping Radish
Restaurant and Brewery in Manteo. We'll have our happy hour there and
enjoy their micro-brews. Those who want to stay can enjoy a German meal there.
Saturday we will visit Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the

5th Annual
Joint Rally with The VAC
-------------------------------------------------------------
Our Autumn Joint Rally with the Vintage Airstream Club this year will be at the
George Washington National Birthplace in Colonial Beach, VA. hosted again by
WDCUers Harley Muse and John Gilliland. Verbal authorization has been
received to hold the rally, followed up by written permission sometime in the
coming weeks. We are pursuing further coordination and firming
up the details. The assigned area, as expected, will be the area
where the Northern Virginia unit held it's Fall Rally. The circus
tent has been reserved for our use, and we were told the setup
details will be worked out in the next week or so. So things are rolling
along. Still to be worked out are any rental fees (if there are any), so
we can come up with a rally fee.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Community Service Project
----------------------------------------------
There may
be an opportunity for a Unit Sponsored Community Service Project in connection
with the GWB . The Region is tallying hours and type of service so this will be
our last opportunity this year to contribute to the numbers. The details of
what project we will work on have yet to be determined. So, if you are
planning on attending the VAC rally this year and want to participate in a
project contact me or Harley and we will let you know what is happening as the
project develops.
Thanks in advance for you participation.

Caravan to
International
--------------------------------------------------------------
The Official Caravan to International has been cancelled. Anyone planning to go
to The 45th International Rally in Rapid City, SD this year, will have to make
their own arrangements or you can join us in our Kamikaze Trek across the
plains to Rapid City. From New Hampshire we plan to stop at Penn Wood Airstream
Park, then on to Jackson Center for a tour of the factory, then an overnight
stay near Sioux Falls and finally to the Elks Club in Rapid City for the VAC
Parade into International. If this sound exhausting, we'll see you there.
Email Me if your interested in meeting us along the way!!!

Restoration Project !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------
As some of you know I'm "still" in the process of restoring a '65
Caravel. I have replaced the body shell onto the frame and reinsulated the
belly. The next step is to design, purchase and install a gray water tank which
was not available on the Caravel in '65, then rewire, insulate, and replace the
interior panels.
Check out this link for the pics!!

VACer's of the WDCU"
A history of the Washington DC Unit
---------------------------------------------------------------
During this past winter when I had nothing to do, I started cataloging all the
pictures we have taken at our Rallies. I've been putting together a Multimedia
program of the first two years of fun we have had with the club. I hope to have
it finished by the Outer Banks Rally and I have about 30 hours left to complete
it! The slide presentation with music should be about 50 minutes viewing time.

Enjoy!!
