The Washington DC Unit (Unit #170)

Greetings WDCUers,

In the wake of this national tragedy and trying to maintain some
semblance of normalcy I have elected to send out our Newsletter. As you can
see by the date this was composed prior to yesterdays events. Please take a
moment if you haven't already, to say a prayer for all those you have lost
there lives to this heinous of all crimes against humanity.

This is the first Newsletter from your President Select. Our outgoing
President Tom Howarth is on travel and has asked me to help in getting our
News Past and Present out to the membership. In case you hadn't heard, our
numbers are growing. We have hit the milestone of 53 Regular members and 40
affiliates. With that as a background I thought I would start off plugging
our next rally!
Please take note that the Fall Rally schedule reported in the Blue
Beret for early November has been rescheduled to the last week in October.
The details of the rally and the info to sign up are below. So if you

The year 2001 has been a great year for the WDCU with the success of the
Cherry
Blossom Rally in Maryland, Our first unit Caravan to International, and our
Mount Washington Rally in New Hampshire. At the International Rally in Sioux
Falls, South Dakota the WDCU parked with the Vintage Club and a great time
was had by all. The Vintage club had a great grassy parking area at the rear
of the fairgrounds and Happy Hour was held under a large spreading Oak. It
seemed like every time we passed by there, day or night, there was somebody
out there soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the conversation. I
attended the 2001 WBCCI Delegates business meeting where I can now report
that everything remains Status Quo. No major business discussed. The recap
of our MWR was provided from several sources and written by my wife Linda.

Mt Washington Rally, August 9-12

The Washington DC Unit had its first rally in New England with Linda and
Wayne Moore as hosts. Saco River Campground was the place for 30 coaches to
come together and have a great time.

The weekend started out on Thursday with a caravan of 12 coaches starting at
the NH/ MA border-traveling north. Stops included The Old Man of the
Mountain, The Cog Railway and a photo opportunity with the 12 coaches on the
entrance road in front of the Mt. Washington Hotel and Mount Washington. We
pulled into the campground in time for a Happy Hour to meet up with all of
those that didn't participate in the caravan.

An open house was scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Of the 30 coaches
attending, 24 of them were vintage. A number of people traveled many
hours to come and view the vintage trailers that afternoon. Some were folks
that wanted a vintage trailer and some were folks that had one but did not
know what the possibilities were for restoration.

Each evening there was a campfire and plenty of vintage sharing. Terry
Tyler facilitated a "Two Minute Seminar" where folks were able to tell about
their restorations of what they had learned and what would they do
different. Each subject could only take two minutes with Sandi manning the
timer and letting him or her know their time was up. It was great fun and
very informative for everyone.

As usual we all came together to share our dinner meals with one another.
Friday evening was a wonderful "Potluck Dinner" where they're all sorts of
dishes and always plenty. Saturday was a BBQ dinner, which everyone
enjoyed. The mornings started off with coffee and pastry for anyone who was
interested but it also started the day off with "Talking Trailers" something
we all love to do.

Most people went out and about in the North Conway, Mount Washington Valley.
There was plenty to do from soaking and paddling in the Saco River, outlet
shopping, The Cog Railway rides up Mount Washington, scenic railway rides
through the valley and hiking. Russ Ley led a hike to Lonesome Lake. There
were 20 people, 3 dogs and a Cockatiel that enjoyed the hike which they were
able to see one of the few hiking huts on the mountain. They all had a
great time and the weather was perfect for it.

Our farthest travelers of the rally were Anthony and Nell Slocock from
England. Anthony is a charter member of the Washington DC Unit and he
brought his Mum Nell over for her first trip to the US. They traveled in a
1963 Globetrotter.

The weather was superb and all had a great time and will be looking forward
to the next rally at Rohoboth, DE
