Most Commonly Asked Support Questions

How much bandwidth do you provide per website?

There is no firm quota on user-allowed disk space or data transfer. We generally prefer that users keep their sites under 30 MB, but we do allow larger sites on a case-by-case basis. Contact the FreeNet Administrator if your site requires more than 30 MB and you'd like to be hosted by ServInt FreeNet.

Do you support Microsoft FrontPage?

NO WE DO NOT

What video and audio capabilities do your servers have?

The server's ability to support your streaming needs depends largely on what software you would be using for the streaming video technology. Microsoft NetShow is not available on the FreeNet service. We have installed a limited (free) version of Real software (RealAudio / RealVideo) which supports up to 20 simultaneous connections. We also have QuickTime software available.

Your site says you offer e-mail accounts along with your website. How does that work?

You can select from two different options to get e-mail for your organization. You can either use e-mail aliases (or "redirects"), or get POP accounts for your e-mail.

"Redirects" are what most people choose. This takes incoming mail to an address at your domain (e.g., info@yoursite.org) and automatically re-routes it to another pre-existing E-mail address (e.g., yoursite@aol.com). People generally choose this so that they don't need to switch settings for their mail program between the address that they usually check their mail with, and their new @yoursite account.

POP (which stands for Post Office Protocol) accounts are what people traditionally think of as E-mail boxes. You enter the appropriate POP server, login and password information into your mail reader program, and you read your mail.

You can choose for your organizational addresses to be redirects, POP accounts or a mixture of both.

To request e-mail accounts for your organization, you will need to wait until after your application has been processed. Then, simply e-mail the FreeNet Administrator and specify what e-mail addresses you would like for your organization.

Do you support CGI scripts?

The FreeNet servers do support CGI scripts (preferably for Unix/Perl, although a C/C++ compiler is available), however due to a lack of resources, we do not provide support for the functionality of your scripts. CGI execution is allowed from any user directory. Perl v5.004_02 is the latest Perl version installed. Our C/C++ compiler is gcc 2.7.2.1. Server-side includes are also supported, but we ask that you allow us to evaluate your .shtml pages for security concerns before you post them.

If you encounter problems with your cgi scripting, we recommend that you either provide your own programming-skilled volunteer, or you browse the existing on-line CGI script archives for CGIs which you can adapt to your site. Two script archive sites which we recommend are http://www.bignosebird.com and http://www.htmlgoodies.com, although you can probably locate many more through a search engine.

Most of the downloadable scripts require slight modifications to make workable with your site. Most scripts can be edited with the text editor of your choice and uploaded.

Can you give me some technical background on the ServInt FreeNet servers?

FreeNet is hosted on single-CPU Intel Pentium servers running FreeBSD 4.7 Unix. It uses the Apache webserver (currently version 1.3.26) for web delivery, and Sendmail 8.12.6 for mail delivery. Perl version 5 is installed on the servers for CGI use.
