Somali Community Orientation Program

To better address the orientation needs of the Somali community here in Columbus, four local agencies serving Somalis (Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, Somali Women's Association, Somali East African Development and Economic Coordination, and Somali Resettlement and Integration Agency) submitted a grant to the Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. The grant was awarded and is effective 7/1/01.

The project will provide orientation to newly-arrived Somalis on a wide range of topics such as housing, health and mental health, employment, public assistance, education, language and literacy, security, transportation, daycare, immigration, parenting issues, home safety, and so on. Somali-language newspaper, TV and/or radio, and orientation workshops will be produced to highlight orientation messages, available resources, and community events.

OPENINGS:

TV/Radio Producer: Full time. Minimum high school education, college preferred. Demonstrated experience in communications, media, related fields. Familiarity with production equipment and technology. Experience with digital video editing, different tape formats. Bilingual and bicultural with respect to the Somali community. Strong organizational, managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills. Valid driver's license.

Newspaper Editor:
Full time. Minimum high school education, college preferred. Demonstrated experience in communications, journalism, media, community development or related fields. Strong investigative and communicative skills, both oral and written. Computer literate. Demonstrated ability to translate Somali to English and vice verse. Basic familiarity with written media production. Bicultural and bilingual with respect to the Somali community. Valid driver's license.

Administrative Assistant:
Part-time (20 hrs/wk). Supports TV Producer and Editor. High school education, college experience recommended. Demonstrated experience in communications, media, community development or related fields. Proficient in word processing. Organizational and clerical skills. Experience in desktop publishing and/or other media production highly desirable. Bilingual/bicultural with respect to the Somali community. Valid driver's license.

Researcher:
Part-time (20 hrs/wk). Supports TV Producer and Editor. High school education, college experience recommended. Demonstrated experience in communications, media, community development or related fields. Strong investigative and communication skills, both oral and written. Experience in desktop publishing and/or other media production highly desirable. Familiarity with production equipment and technology. Bilingual/bicultural with respect to the Somali community. Valid driver's license.

Bookkeeper:
Part-time (13 hrs/wk). Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Background and at least one year's experience in accounting or bookkeeping. Familiarity with technology and systems to improve communication, record keeping, data base management etc. Teaching and training skills. Interest in working with refugee community organizations.
