eating together Refugees from these two communities began arriving in Columbus in the mid-1980s, fleeing a Communist regime and civil war. Their numbers in Columbus are currently estimated at around 4,000, with a significant portion being secondary migrants, i.e. many were first resettled in other parts of the United States and later chose to relocate to Columbus.

Many have acculturated successfully over the past two decades. However, many families face a new set of challenges, such as inter-generational conflict and deterioriating health status of the aged. Many are still ill-equipped, for reasons of linguistic abilities, educational levels, cultural adaptation or economic resources, to deal with the challenges of attaining self-sufficiency. A significant number, particularly those with large families, must rely on public assistance.
