The employment program at CMAA is primarily funded by Refugee Social
Services funds administered through the Franklin County Department of Jobs and
Family Services. CMAA's Employment Specialist and bilingual caseworkers assist
refugees in identifying their job goals, understanding the American work environment,
and ultimately placing them into jobs. Follow-up and up-grading of jobs are also
emphasized as refugees gain language and professional skills over time.
Specialized services, such as Math class for Somali refugees, are also available.
Columbus's booming economy and relatively plentiful jobs are the main reason
for the recent influx of refugees into the metropolitan area. Light industry,
assembly and packing, hospitality industry and other jobs offer entry-level
opportunities to many new refugees. Although refugees are fortunate enough to be
granted automatic work authorization, challenges such as language, literacy, lack of US
professional certification, need for daycare, health care, and transportation often need
to be addressed by CMAA staff.
Interested refugees seeking work, and interested employers seeking workers should call CMAA at 224-8888.
