The Senior Refugee Program has been underway since November of 1999, led by the Franklin County Office on Aging and in coordination with Jewish Family Services and Community Refugee and Immigrant Services. Like most refugees, seniors face significant communication and acculturation problems, and in addition, like many seniors, face isolation and heightened health and mental health issues. With these funds CMAA provides targeted services to Cambodian and Ethiopian elderly, with the aim of increasing their access to mainstream services such as PASSPORT and Senior Options. CMAA has also provided training to County workers on Ethiopian and Cambodian cultural issues concerning the elderly in those communities. In May 2001 the program sponsored a workshop entitled "Terror in the Old Land, Trauma in the New Land", which dealt with issues of mental health, assessment, and treatment for senior immigrants. |
